From mid-September through the end of November, the Village of Galena has street, sidewalk, parking and park work running on almost every block of its small downtown at the same time. The 2026 Community Improvement Projects page lists nine projects. Seven of them are set to finish in November or by Thanksgiving. A new Village Hall entrance follows in December, and village-wide asphalt repairs have no date listed.
The projects may read like a list of unrelated repairs, but they share one footprint. Together they cover the walking loop that runs from the Village Square down Columbus Street, over to Walnut and Holmes, and into Miller Park, where the Ohio to Erie Trail comes through town. The village is rebuilding that whole route in one season, so the disruption and the finished work both arrive together.
One Walking Route, Rebuilt in a Single Season
The village's resident resources page puts Miller Park on N. Walnut Street, with a playground, a basketball court and a paved walking trail. The Ohio to Erie Trail runs through the park between Walnut and Holmes streets. The trailhead sits on N. Walnut, and the Galena segment includes the bridge over Little Walnut Creek. The village calls this local stretch the Thomas W. Hopper Legacy Trail.
Line that geography up against the project list and the pattern is clear. The two streets that bracket the trail corridor, Walnut and Holmes, are both being rebuilt. The trail itself is being widened and resurfaced with funding from Preservation Parks of Delaware County. The Miller Park parking lot is being expanded and paved, and its pavilion is getting restrooms. On the other end of the loop, Columbus Street is getting heavy-duty pavement and a raised center-block crosswalk, and the Village Square is getting new ADA-accessible sidewalks and a crosswalk.
Every place where a walker moves between the downtown blocks and the trail is part of this fall's work.
The Finish Line Is a Two-Week Window
Here are the village's published target dates in order, with the contractor named where the village names one:
- Columbus Street, Chemcote/CTL: heavy-duty pavement, a raised center-block crosswalk and new striping, scheduled September 15 through November 15, 2026.
- Walnut Street: resurfacing, a replacement stormwater catch basin, sidewalk upgrades, an ADA-accessible pedestrian sidewalk and an expanded, paved and striped parking area, targeted for November 2026.
- Village Square sidewalk and crosswalk, T Crete: targeted for November 2026.
- Miller Park Trail: widening and resurfacing, targeted for November 2026.
- Holmes Street, the McB and Sands Decker design-build team: widening, resurfacing, restriping and repairs, planned for completion by Thanksgiving 2026.
- Miller Park Pavilion Phase II: restrooms, electrical work, concrete and stonework, planned for completion by Thanksgiving 2026.
- Miller Park parking lot, Chemcote/CTL: driveway paving plus an expanded, paved and striped lot, targeted for the end of November 2026.
- Village Hall entrance, T Crete and Lawn Masters: a new ADA-accessible entrance at 109 Harrison Street, targeted for December 2026.
There is also a ninth item, village-wide asphalt repairs, with no date attached.
Put together, most of the list is due in the second half of November. The village adds that schedules depend on weather, material availability and construction conditions, and it asks residents to watch for updates on timing and access. Treat these as targets, not promises.
What's Closed on Columbus Street, and What's Still Open
The most visible change downtown right now is on the north side of West Columbus Street. A village notice posted September 24 says crews would start demolition and sewer-tap work at 42 W. Columbus Street on Monday, September 28. Parallel parking on the north side of West Columbus will stay closed until the new public parking, sidewalks and infrastructure are finished.
The same address is also getting a new business. According to the Delaware Gazette's summary of this year's Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, property owner Matt Hollis proposed a 1,040-square-foot building styled after a 1950s-era automotive service station, to be used as a classic car dealership. The commission approved the amended development plan 3-2 in February, contingent on variances and engineering approvals. Hollis said the dealership would operate by appointment and have a 12-foot-wide private, gated access point. An earlier village notice from August 20 confirms that Hollis Motor Co. construction has started and that the north-side parking closure is tied to it.
None of the construction notices the village has posted lists a detour or a temporary parking alternative, and the new public parking at 42 W. Columbus is itself still being built.
The downtown restaurants are still open. These are the places on or right off the square, with addresses from their own websites:
- Galena Diner, 13 Columbus Street, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- The Coffee Vault, 9 W. Columbus Street, a coffee shop featured on the village's home page. Its online ordering is paused right now, so check before counting on a mobile order.
- Toni's Family Trattoria, 19 W. Columbus Street, on the Galena square.
- Son of Thurman, 31 W. Columbus Street, open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for dine-in and carryout, according to its location page.
All four sit on the stretch where the raised crosswalk and new pavement are going in. Once the work is done, they will open onto the finished streetscape.
Halloween Falls Inside the Work Window
Galena's village trick-or-treat is Saturday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. That date falls inside the Columbus Street work window, which runs through November 15. The village has not published any construction plan for the evening. Until it does, expect the north-side parking on West Columbus to still be closed that night.
October also has several costumed events just outside the village:
- Trick or Treat Trail, Sunday, October 18, 1 to 4 p.m., at Gallant Woods Park. Preservation Parks bills it as free and for all ages, with a costumed trail, pumpkin decorating and hayrides.
- Genoa Township Fall Fest, Saturday, October 24, noon to 3 p.m., at Freeman's Farm, 6142 Lewis Center Road. The township lists live music, hayrides, a costume contest and a Trick-or-Treat Village.
- Sticky Fingers Ice Cream Parlor, 5140 Cheshire Road, closes for the season on Sunday, October 25, according to its website.
For walkers, Preservation Parks' Step Into Fall challenge runs through November 30 and covers the district's trails, about 19 miles in total. Joining is free, and a hiking stick and medallion cost $15. The challenge ends around the same time the Miller Park Trail is due to reopen at its new width.
The Miller Park Pavilion Is Modeled on Galena's Lost Train Station
The pavilion is the one project on the list that adds a new building to downtown rather than repairing an old surface. When the village announced it in September 2025, it described the design this way:
"The design pays tribute to Galena's historic train station, which was tragically lost to fire in the early 20th century."
BSHM Architects designed the pavilion. The announcement scheduled Phase I, the pavilion's initial structure, to begin in fall 2025, and the village reports it was completed earlier in 2026. The announcement said Phase II would add water, electric and sewer service along with restrooms, making the pavilion "a fully equipped venue for community events, recreation, and gatherings." The 2026 project page shows Phase I complete and Phase II underway, with a Thanksgiving target. Phase III, which covers painting, trim, signage and landscaping, is planned for 2028.
That timing affects how the trailhead works. Once Phase II is done, the stop where the Ohio to Erie Trail meets N. Walnut will have restrooms, a bigger paved lot and a wider trail. All three are due in the same few weeks of November.
Also on the Village Hall Calendar
Several public hearings are scheduled at Village Hall, 109 Harrison Street, while the construction wraps up:
- Monday, October 26, about 6 p.m.: a hearing on a development plan for 50 Front St. The notice names the lot but not the planned use.
- Monday, October 26, about 6 p.m.: a hearing on a zoning code update that would allow fences within utility and drainage easements.
- Wednesday, November 18, about 7 p.m.: a hearing on annexation and development of the former Blackhawk Golf Course at 8830 Dustin Rd. by Romanelli & Hughes. The notice says this hearing has been postponed several times, most recently from October 21.
The next big village event after the construction season is the Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. If the November targets hold, that will be the first village gathering on the new Columbus Street pavement and the rebuilt Village Square sidewalks.
